The “Indie Gaming Village” at Apps World North America earlier this week was indeed a village compared to the rest of the bustling convention.

To even find it, you had to wade through a dense expo floor packed with booths advertising app analytics services and monetization solutions.

Sure enough, though, there it was: a small corner on the second floor of San Francisco’s Moscone West convention center, housing a modest selection of phone and tablet games either recently released or up and coming.

Here were a few of my favorites:

Sleep Furiously

We caught up with Raredrop Games at this year's Develop to check out its upcoming puzzle platformer To The Throne - a game that wears its influences proudly on its sleeves.

It's best described as 2011's puzzle platformer Catherine plonked on Gameboy and given a medieval theme.

You play as a young and inexperienced king who, when he sits on the throne for the first time, gets booted off it. His emblem then splits into six pieces and is scattered across the six floors of his castle. You then set off on an adventure to reclaim it.

And that involves mostly, well, moving blocks. The aim is to create staircases up to the mini throne in each level to complete it, earning a star rating based on how many moves it takes.

Then there are leaderboards you can climb based on how fast you complete a floor. It's a nice little metagame to extend the experience.

To The Throne is all set for launch in the App Store on August 4th as a premium title. You can grab it for £1.49 / $1.99.

Initially released almost a year ago on the App Store, Shadow Blade: Reload is finally headed to Android this weekend.

The semi-sequel to PG's Gold Award-winning Shadow Blade follows Kuro, the last remaining ninja of his clan. This action/platformer features beautifully designed environments, challenging multi-platform levels, and plenty of foes to beat down and avoid. It's samurai vs ninja in a battle against darkness.

With more than 40 levels to complete, four boss fights to dominate, a bunch of comic-style storylines to follow, and multiple modes to enjoy, Shadow Blade: Reload is certainly one for platform lovers.

Though the game is set to release this Sunday the 15th January, you can check out its 'Unreleased' version on Google Play now.
'You may have heard of Avadon,' I say with gusto and enough charm to woo a blue whale. To those who know about the game, you'll be pleased to know that the concluding title Avadon 3: The Warborn HD is on its way to iPad 'soon'.

Just as a refresher, Avadon 3: The Warborn is an old-school fantasy RPG which concludes the much-loved trilogy. As a Hand of Avadon it's you job to defend your territory and deter the invading barbarians and monsters rampaging through your homeland.

With five classes to choose from, each with their own unique spells and abilities, plenty of dungeons to explore, and numerous folks to pass judgement on, there's a hell of a lot to do and lots of endings to unlock. Will you fight for your people or betray them? Fight for what's right, or fight for power and wealth? It's entirely up to you.

Though Avadon 3: The Warborn is currently out on PC/Mac, the iPad version should be coming sometime before the end of the year.

This game gameplay was similar to most Android simulation-based games. Hay Day is the best example of this game. Grow and sell things to earn money from customers. World Chef MOD APK has come with restaurant gameplay, and you are the boss of this restaurant. You have managed everything, and the whole control was happening from the owner’s side. This is entirely your own business, so you need to grow your revenue from the restaurant management. In the first stage of the game, your restaurants have limited facilities and customers—you only chef a wait of starting the game. Make cook and serve to the customers to grow your business.

With all of the leaks and articles floating about for the past week you may think you know about Google's newest phone already, but finally Pixel was revealed at today's keynote and what a nice product it is.

Both of the Pixel phones, the 5-inch and 5.5-inch, are made out of aluminium with a glass window at the back surrounding the camera, fingerprint sensor (Pixel Imprint), and flash. Both devices have 4 GB of RAM, USB-C, 32 or 128 GB storage, Bluetooth, and a 3.5 mm headphone jack. Nice jab, Google.

The Keynote was arranged in five elements:
Google Assistant
Google Assistant is essentially Google's Siri – but if Siri had an older, more successful sister. The app is a highly knowledgeable, highly intelligent piece of kit which features machine learning, so the more you use it the more useful it'll become to you personally. Using your 'hot' word you can get your Google Assistant to pull up photos/files from specific dates, find locations, text people, and make restaurant reservations. It's nearly perfect.
Top of the class camera
Where the iPhone keynote spent well over half an hour chatting about how amazing their camera is, Google has drifted in and dropped the mic, showing us how it's done with a simple rundown. Both the Pixel and Pixel XL rear cameras scored 89 in DxOMark – that's higher than the Note 7, iPhone 7, and, well, anything in the field. With a 12.3 megapixel resolution, Brian Rakowski gave us the rundown on how it trumps other phones on the market, including Smart Burst, HDR+, and 0% shutter lag. Pixel's camera has the shortest capture time out there as well as a pretty impressive video auto-stabilisation feature.
Unlimited Cloud storage
Yes, you read that right. Google offers free, unlimited storage for full-resolution images and videos shot with the Pixel. That takes a lot of pressure off of snap-happy photo fiends and up-and-coming videographers.
Communication
Google has been extremely attentive to customer needs with this upcoming build as updates, customer care, and communication have been looked into. 24/7 customer care is now inbuilt into Pixel, letting you contact someone if there's an issue – that includes optional screen share to show them exactly what's going on. Google Duo, a new video calling app, also comes preinstalled and has a cool feature which livestreams your contact before you pick up the phone. It sounds creepy when I write it like that, but it's pretty cool.

Other features such as quick switch, automatic updates (which now download in the background), and fast charging are also available. The fast charging lets you get an incredible seven hours of battery in just 15 minutes; perfect for the forgetful, on-the-go types.
Built for VR
With this new generation of smart phones, it's nice to see that VR is no longer an addition but rather a necessity in the product's designs. Google's own headset, Google Daydream, is a truly beautiful bit of kit and you can read about it in a separate article here.

As announced to an array of applause, the phones come in three colours: Quite Black, Really Blue, and Very Silver. Very good. Pre-orders opened today as the prices start at $649 for the smaller of the two at 32 GB, and that price increases to $749 at 120 GB. The Pixel XL starts at $769 for the 32 GB model and increases to a whopping $869 for 120 GB of storage. You can also pay monthly, as per the usual spiel.

A twitter user had just discovered a Metroid easter egg in Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze some four years after the game launched on Wii U. A video archiving the finding shows a Metroid hatchling floating in the background of Level 4-3, Amiss Abyss. The easter egg appears in both Wii U and Switch versions of the game.

Here's a how-to video on seeing the Metroid cameo I discovered earlier. Works on Wii U and Switch! #Nintendo pic.twitter.com/wJWLo33HEz— Shane Marchis (@ShaneMarchis) August 3, 2018Players have to go through quite a process to make the Metroid appear. Players traverse the Amiss Abyss until they happen upon an underwater tunnel about halfway through the level. If you’re chasing this particular easter egg, you’ll have to traverse the tunnel, then swim back through backwards, this time dodging the dangerous obstacles that have suddenly appeared. Players will encounter electric seaweed, and will need to take damage to become invincible to it. Once that’s done, the Metroid will appear briefly in the background.Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze was actually developed by Retro Studios, who also worked on the Metroid Prime Trilogy for GameCube and Wii, so it’s fitting that Metroid would make a brief appearance.

Have you tried to find this easter egg yet?
